Why Working From Home Isn’t All That Bad – The Benefits of Working From Home

The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken things up to say the least and has changed the way we go about our daily lives. Businesses everywhere are taking precautions and one of the most common measures taken is getting staff to work from home. To many of us, getting up in the morning, dressing up and heading out to our offices has been the routine for so long that working from home may feel a little weird. It’s just something that has not been a part of our work culture. Although it may take a little getting used to, here’s Why Working From Home Isn’t All That Bad – The Benefits of Working from Home.

1. Travelling Time

Morning Peak Hour Traffic

Let’s be honest. One of the things we dread about going to the office is the commute. Whether you are driving or using public transport, there are certain things that get to you. If you drive, you need to plan your journey to find the best route with the least congestion and no ERP gantries if possible. After you find the best way (with no guarantee of free-flowing traffic), you may encounter multiple berserk drivers. The one in front of you, driving too slow, the one behind you trying to beat their previous best time or the one next to you, trying to cut in front of you without signalling.

A completely different set of challenges await those who are taking public transport systems. Packing yourself like canned sardines into congested trains, too close for comfort and having your new shoes scuffed by fellow commuters. Train delays? That’s another story altogether. This is one problem you will never face, working from home. Meeting at 9 am? Get up by 8.50 am and you are good to go!

2. Dress The Part

So you slept a little longer. Why not? You didn’t have to factor in travel time. You have a few minutes before you need to join a video call and you are still in your sleepwear. Remember to always keep at least one neatly ironed shirt/blouse in your wardrobe that you can swiftly put on. Something of a neutral colour wouldn’t gain too much attention, so you could recycle the same shirt for multiple meetings throughout the week and no one would even know.

Ah, the benefits of working from home. Did we mention you don’t need to worry about pants?

3. Lunch Options

Healthy Lunch

Now to our favourite part of a work day, LUNCH! Yes, that one hour that makes you forget your troubles. You leave the office, you’re a little stressed and feel that you need to reward yourself for all the hard work.  You walk past a burger joint or dessert shop. What do you do? You go ahead and reward yourself. Especially when all the restaurants serving the healthy food are overflowing with hangry office workers, or at least that’s the excuse you give yourself.

If you’re working from home, you have more control over what you consume. Fill your fridge with healthy food options and you would have no excuse for not preparing yourself a healthy, hearty meal every day of the week that your body would thank you for later. Oh, and did we mention you would not have to follow a strict lunch timing? Eat when you’re hungry. Eat some, keep the rest for when you get hungry an hour later perhaps?

4. Keep an Eye on the Family

The kids are at home! Some pre-schools have implemented a stay home arrangement during this period. If you are a parent with young kids, the benefit of working from home is the guarantee of peace of mind. When your mind is not occupied about who’s going to take care of your children or if the help you’ve hired is the right one, you can be more productive with your work.

Even if you don’t have kids, staying close to your family (parents, siblings or spouse/partner) works wonders for you, emotionally.

5. Get More Done

Doing the Laundry at home

Just picture this. There’s a mountain of unwashed clothes at home. You would not even imagine doing the laundry on a regular weekday because you just wouldn’t have the time. The benefit of working from home however is that you could just throw the clothes into the washing machine, carry on with your work and return in a couple of hours to transfer them to the dryer and by the time you are done with your work for the day, the laundry is done too!

That is just one task that you can knock off your weekend to-do list. Imagine how much more you could get done?

6. Make More Cents

Saving Money

Now, this should peak your interest. The next great benefit of working from home actually links back to points 1, 3 & even 4. Let us explain. By working from home, you save significantly on transport. With 2 trips a day, you are bound to spend a large amount of money whether you are travelling by train, bus, cab or driving your own car.

You would also save a ton of money on food, especially if you work in the CBD and you prefer to be on a healthy diet. Do you have any idea how much a good bowl of salad costs? By preparing your meal at home, you can save money while having full control over the stuff that goes into your meal.

Lastly, if you have young kids at home because their schools have closed, you would need to hire help to babysit. If you’re home, you save on that too! And that’s probably going to amount to a huge sum. Makes sense?

As the world comes together to battle the COVID-19 situation, we hope that everyone will take the time to re-evaluate our decisions and its impact on curbing the spread of the virus. Stay home and stay safe and play our part in ensuring that everything settles soon enough.
