i Light Marina Bay 2016: ‘In Praise of Shadows’

Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival is back for its 4th edition from 4th to 27th March 2016 at the Marina Bay Waterfront. It starts every evening after 7:30pm till 11pm, with an extension to 12am on Fridays and Saturdays. Moreover, admission is free! If you haven’t checked out this exciting and interactive light festival, gather your friends and families and head down before the festival ends.

i Light Marina Bay 2016 showcases 25 sustainable and innovative light artworks by artists around the world, with increased participation from local educational institutions including NUS, NTU, Nanyang Polytechnic and Singapore Polytechnic. There will also be an exciting and refreshing lineup of programmes.

Themed ‘In Praise of Shadows’, the festival challenges the obsession that ‘brighter is better’, and invites viewers to readjust perceptions of lighting. It aims to encourage visitors and artists to re-envision Singapore’s future and create a sustainable and harmonious relationship with the environment.

Creative Art Installations

An example of an art installation is Light Origami by KAZ Shirane, a Tokyo-based artist and space designer. The artwork is a giant 3D kaleidoscope, which visitors can enter and be entranced by the beautiful light effects when light is projected within the domed structure.

Another example is Moon Haze, an exhibit by Feng Jiacheng and Huang Yuanbei, who are both young budding artists from China. The moon functions as a monitoring system for air pollutants, responding accordingly to its surrounding air quality – the better the air quality, the brighter the moon, demonstrating how we have a close and direct impact on our environment.

Future World: Where Art Meets Science

In commemoration of its fifth anniversary, ArtScience Museum collaborated with teamLab to create Future World, an interactive digital space for visitors which takes up one quarter of the museum’s total area. It features 15 digital installations, which evolves in real-time in response to interactions with visitors. From 12th to 27th March 2016, you can enjoy a “1-for-1” entry by simply flashing a copy of the i Light Festival Guide at the ArtScience Museum Box Office, and show that you’ve liked the ArtScience Museum Facebook page.
