A 2021 Guide to Celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Singapore

The auspicious month of Ramadan has begun! Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered the holiest month for the Muslim community. Held from 12th April to 12th May this 2021, Muslims will abstain from eating or drinking during the daylight hours. To mark the end of this fasting period, Hari Raya Aidilfitri will be celebrated on the 13th of May this year. To prepare for the celebrations, we have compiled a festive guide for things to do, places to visit, and restaurants to break fast at! Scroll down to learn more.

Things to do at home

1. Decorate your homes

A festive occasion is a perfect time to engage in some spring cleaning! To welcome and host the auspicious occasion in our homes, we first need to give it a deep cleanse before adorning it with festive decorations and ornaments. Heighten the festive mood by setting up fairy lights across your house and brightening up your living space. A decorated space is a happy space, so take full advantage of this occasion to make some new changes to your home. Swap old cutlery sets for new ones, add mirrors, paintings or pictures, and change the dull sofa covers you have always been eyeing! Festivals, like Hari Raya Aidilfitri, allow us to turn our homes into brand new once again!

2. Time to dress up

Getting to dress up is another reason to love ethnic festivals! Hari Raya Aidilfitri gives you the opportunity to revamp your wardrobe and build a new festive look for yourself! Ethnic celebrations are perfect occasions to take it up a notch and wow your family and friends with your new curated look. Either when making house visits or taking the obligatory photoshoots, you should be dressed up for the occasion. So have fun picking out this year’s outfit and choosing between an individual look or colour coordinating with your family!

3. Zoom call with your family and friends

Since the pandemic is very much still around, we cannot visit as many family members this Hari Raya Aidilfitri. With visits being restrained to 8 pax per house, we can optimise on technology to greet everyone safely! Technology has truly made it easy for us to stay connected with our loved ones – be it through WhatsApp call, zoom video call, google meets, skype, or simple facetime. No matter where we are, globally or locally, we can still stay in touch and pass our greetings during festivals. So switch on your festive lights, lay the sumptuous cuisine, and pick up that phone to send your greetings to those who couldn’t physically be with you for this occasion.
